IoT and Big Data Solutions working together

Friday, March 1st, 2019

Talking about Internet of Things (IoT) without Big Data will make the conversation incomplete or irrelevant. IoT and Big Data are closely interlinked and their connections cannot be analyzed separately.

IoT is helping us to make a positive impact on our lifestyle, security system, energy conservation, transport operations, health, and other services. The data collected from IoT devices are read by Big Data experts for analyzing data, observing data trends, and learning data patterns. There are several devices linked to the internet, and transmitting data to the internet-platforms for examining and analyzing data. IoT and Big Data management is taking the technology to next level.

Big Data

Big Data existed long before Internet of Things arrived. When the analytics demonstrated about the veracity, velocity, variety and volume; the term Big Data was interpreted. Big Data comprises of both unstructured and structured data.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The idea of Internet of Things (IoT) is to convert objects into smart devices. Various devices are equipped with chips and sensors for the purpose of gathering data. These chips and sensors are programmed for collecting data that include product performances and user’s usage pattern. Cars, watches, room lights, home appliances, railway tracks, etc., are some of the examples that turned objects to smart devices. Soon, IoT will be touching every facet of human lives. Smartphones are one of the known devices of Internet of Things.

Bringing IoT and Big Data together

IoT devices evolve influx of data every minute. Examining, analyzing, and segregating the (unstructured and structured) data on real-time basis to deliver exact answers is a critical process to handle. That is where Big Data solution come for the rescue. Big Data has the capacity to handle large volumes of data generated from IoT devices. Also, it can extract required details for generating insights during the continuous stream of information. IoT conducts data completely on a different scale, which needs fast and accurate extraction. It requires analytical solution for processing the data ingestion.

IoT and Big data are working together

The examples of Big Data and IoT working together could be numerous. Out of many, three models have been listed below:

1. Shipping

Shipping organizations have started equipping their vehicles with chips and sensors to monitor engine health, number of stops, mileage, miles per gallon, and speed. The data collected from chips and sensors helps in improving the efficiency of the shipping organizations.

2. Agriculture

A network of sensors is installed on the field. These sensors are connected to the system monitors. This network of sensors transmits the data providing information on available moisture level on the crops to the farmers. As a result, the IoT devices used for irrigation transmit influx of data which is being read by Big Data for analysis and action.

3. Transportation

The companies engaged in providing world-class transportation services are using IoT solutions to keep their customers happy and satisfied. By using Internet of Things (IoT), they are learning about various patterns and customers’ preferences while utilizing their taxi or goods carrier services.

Challenges

It is estimated that there will be billions of IoT devices transmitting data to the internet platforms by 2020. The major challenge that software developers need to work on – would be concerning to cyber security. Such expansion of IoT on Big Data would be prone to several security threats. Devices containing sensitive and confidential data need to be guarded significantly.

Conclusion

The software development companies need to develop such systems that can protect the data from prying eyes during the transmission processes. With an increase of IoT devices, the companies engaged in IoT app development services need to collect relevant and useful data to enhance their clients’ business processes.
